Lead string player Orlando Santiago is known around latin America and in the United States as “El Mostro” (The Monster). Orlando is a virtuoso on “El Cuatro.” The Cuatro is a traditional Spanish lead acoustic guitar invented in The Beautiful Island of Puerto Rico. It has ten strings and is a little bigger than a mandolin. The cuatro is farmiliar to Puerto Ricans, who play it on porches and living rooms with family, friends, and neighbors, singing the old three chord mountain music of the region. Very few musicians--maybe ten worldwide--took the instrument and began playing jazz with groups such as Tito Puente, R&B with artists such as Sheila E and more recently with high powered arena artists such as Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez to name a few. Sabor Riqua is among the few groups in the world that have the ability to do this kind of instrumentation.
