Rand Forbes-cleveland bassistRand Forbes
Bassist Rand Forbes is a native of Los Angeles, California, where he attended UCLA, receiving a BA in Music (composition). His musical education and experience have enabled him to explore bass playing in several musical genres, including jazz, big bands, country/folk, and rock. As a rock musician playing both fretless and fretted electric basses, Rand was an integral part of the avant-garde art-rock band known as "The United States of America," with whom he became a Columbia Records recording artist. The USA’s self-titled album, recently re-released on Sundazed Records, has been cited as the birth of the modern genre of electronica. Rand began double bass studies with Chico Rivera and continued with Peter Mercurio. His early musical education and experience was in classical music, playing in various orchestras around Los Angeles. Upon graduating from UCLA, he enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam era and, after completing combat basic training, he served in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. He has appeared in the Tournament of Roses Parade and at the Rose Bowl with the UCLA Marching Band (playing bass drum) and also appeared in that capacity in the Gene Kelly film, "Hello Dolly."
